Setup

The setup process is a key consideration when choosing different software platforms for your business. If the setup is easy, then you can spend less time and effort learning to use the software, and this in turn gives you more time to focus on growing your business. Every platform offers a variety of features, but different companies have different priorities. Therefore, it’s important to choose a software that addresses your company’s needs. For example, at this moment, maybe it’s more important for you to fix the scheduling bottleneck than it is to look into new marketing strategies. In this case, you should choose a software that has a better scheduling feature.

Generally speaking, there are two different approaches for setup.

  1. The first approach is front-loaded and Breezeworks takes this approach. First, you to do the heavy lifting upfront to set up integrations, add employees, and import customers. Then you jump into the platform to start scheduling your first job.

  2. The second approach is reversed. With both Housecall Pro and Jobber, you perform a quick basic setup then jump into the app to schedule your first job right away. Later on, you can setup integrations and other features when you need them.

All the steps in the setup are illustrated below with screenshots of each platform so you can see what each app looks like from the inside.

Housecall Pro and Jobber all have a 14-day free trial. No credit card is necessary to use the trial. Service Autopilot does not have a free trial but they have a free webinar tour you can schedule with them.

Housecall Pro Setup

Housecall Pro has five easy steps in the setup process. After that, you can still add other features by going to “My Apps”.

After you enter your email address online, it’ll prompt you to select your industry:

Housecall Pro’s web portal is organized with six tabs at the top of the screen: dashboard, schedule, customers, map, my apps, and my money. Below are screenshots of the dashboard, schedule tab, and customer database:

Service Autopilot Setup

Service Autopilot’s setup is not publicly available since they don’t have a free trial, but depending on the membership package, you receive different types of support. On the Startup Membership, you have “done for you” data imports, unlimited chat, email, phone support, and 100 days of consulting with your personal launch advisor. The pro membership adds two live 1-on-1 calls. The Pro Plus membership gives you four live 1-on-1 calls and also the “pro plus setup” package.

Jobber Setup

Jobber has a basic two-step process before you can start using the app to schedule jobs.

First, enter your name, company name, email, and password to sign up for an account.

Then you enter a phone number, years in business, how you heard about Jobber, your company size, your role in the company, and your industry.

Set up your account Jobber

After you finish the setup, click the action button to schedule a job.

Jobber’s web portal is organized with six tabs and twelve sub-tabs on the left side of the screen that includes the dashboard, calendar (month, week, grid, map, list view), clients (people and properties), work (overview, requests, quotes, jobs, invoices view), reports, and timesheet.

Included below are screenshots of the dashboard, calendar, and the clients tab.

Mobile App

Housecall Pro

Housecall Pro’s mobile app is organized with five tabs at the bottom: dashboard, schedule, messages, customers, and more. The mobile app is meant to be used out in the field, so in order to set up additional features, you need to use the web portal.

Jobber

Jobber’s mobile app is much simpler than the web portal. It’s organized in three tabs with your schedule, clients, and time sheet. The plus button gives you access to add a new task, quote, job, expense, or client. For additional features or reporting, log in on the computer to access the web portal.

Features

Housecall Pro, Jobber, and Service Autopilot all cover scheduling, estimates/quotes, invoicing, and payments. Big differences include integrations and additional feature sets.

Service Autopilot and Jobber both focus their feature sets on organizing and streamlining the business to save you time. Both are fairly robust in their feature sets and customizations for the above purposes. Rather than going just as deep in the features to keep the business organized, Housecall Pro decided to add additional features to promote business growth.

If you’re looking for a software that is not as detailed but is more well rounded, then Housecall Pro is your best bet for managing and growing your service business. If you’re looking for something very robust to manage the business and need features like custom forms or job costing, then Jobber or Service Autopilot is the way to go.

The marketing features such as online booking, reviews, postcard/email marketing can all help you grow your revenue online and get more loyal customers. Housecall Pro also integrates with a wide range of other companies that specialize in website builders, generating reviews, business lending, Yelp to tap into their marketplace and more.

Cons: Housecall Pro only operates in the US and Canada and does not have custom forms/templates to create items like checklists or other pdf reports. Other features we currently lack include job costing, inventory tracking, chemical tracking, and equipment management. Quickbooks Online is the only accounting software being integrated at the moment.

Service Autopilot Features

Pros: Besides focusing on organizing your operations, many of their features also cover all the details in helping you manage your service jobs. These features also work for larger projects and contracts.

Cons: Lack of customer facing features besides the client portal. Lack of marketing features and marketing automation.

Jobber Features

Jobber’s feature set is focused on keeping your business organized, impressing your customers, and growing your business.

Jobbers major features include: scheduling, dispatching, invoicing/quoting, a client manager and client hub, QBO and XERO integration, expense tracking, time tracking, and timesheets, routing, GPS tracking, customer reminders, and client follow up, reporting and chemical tracking.

Pros: Jobber does customization and tracking well. They have custom forms/fields for quotes, invoices, customer information, property information and various tracking mechanisms for expenses, chemicals, and time tracking.

Faster payments can help with cash flow and reporting gives you insight into your business, but both these features help to grow the business indirectly and don’t contribute to finding new customers.

Summary

Housecall Pro’s software provides a well-rounded set of tools to help you manage and grow your service business. If you’re looking for something simple to understand and can help you with both organizing and growing your business, then Housecall Pro is the best option for you.

Service Autopilot’s software has a wide range of features and is more customizable than the other two options but with that comes additional time spent on setup and a longer learning process. If you need tools to help manage projects, suppliers, purchase orders, service work and care about tracking details, then Service Autopilot might be what you’re looking for.

Jobber provides a full suite of tools to organize and streamline your service business. What makes them different than the other two is the option to customize forms/fields and processes. If you need that extra room of flexibility and would like to have modular functions, then Jobber might fit your needs.
